TDN Community Liaison Genesis Aquino Recognized by NYC Council
Brooklyn, NY (October 27, 2019) – Our outstanding Community Liaison Genesis Aquino have been recognized by NYC Council for her public service and contributions to the New York-based Dominican and Haitian diaspora.
Born in the Dominican Republican, Genesis moved to Sunset Park under a reunification visa in 2001 at the age of 11 with her dad and sister. She received her Permanent Residency in 2007, just as she was applying for college and became a U.S. citizen in 2014. Her beloved Sunset Park area has one of the largest immigrant populations in the city. For this reason, it is also one of the most targeted areas for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
“What my family has experienced is very similar to what a lot of people in the community have been experiencing for a long time,” Genesis says. “It’s important that our voices are the ones in power… We need to occupy the spaces that belong to us.”
Along with Genesis, our organization would like to thank Brooklyn councilmembers Farah N. Louis, Antonio Reynoso and Rafael L Espinal Jr. for such a beautiful community event.
